MSE at a glance

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals is a newly established department. The department's principal aim is to address challenging issues at the forefront of science and technology while also meeting the demands of the kingdom. Along with offering the graduate program, the MSE department at KFUPM is the first and only department in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region to offer a dedicated undergraduate MSE program. This is an interdisciplinary field that relies on knowledge from many engineering and fundamental scientific disciplines. This enables us to figure out the underlying mechanisms that govern the matter around us to tackle the numerous engineering problems that our society faces. This multidisciplinary approach is instilled in both undergraduate and graduate students through coursework and research.

The study of MSE involves exploring the links between material structure and properties, as well as designing and engineering materials based on those structure-property correlations. Materials science is a highly active area of research that encompasses a broad range of topics such as polymer science, composites, nanomaterials, computational materials science, and so on. Our faculty members are extremely involved in research and have made a commitment to be role models for students. They regularly engage in cutting-edge research to apply these concepts to solve problems in a variety of sectors, including water treatment, membrane design, and solid-state batteries, to mention a few.

Our department's mission is to support the individual development of our exceptional and innovative students so that they can continue to push the field to ever more beneficial breakthroughs. Our students are equipped with the necessary knowledge to understand the material's structure-performance relationship, materials degradation and failure analysis, and a systematic approach to materials selection for a specific application. They obtain hands-on expertise in synthesis, and characterization, as well as experimental design at even the undergraduate level.

Materials Day
We are thrilled to announce the tremendous success of Materials Day, organized by the Materials Science and Engineering Club. This event brought together a diverse community of innovators, professionals, and enthusiasts from all backgrounds to explore the latest advancements in materials science. The day featured 17 incredible booths, showcasing everything from cutting-edge academic research to hands-on displays. The event was designed to inspire and educate, with displays that ranged from interactive demos to insights into the future of materials innovation.

In addition, we were honored to have 6 expert speakers who shared their valuable knowledge on various topics, spanning the latest trends and discoveries in the field. Their talks were thought-provoking and sparked deep discussions among attendees.  One of the highlights of the day was the Horoof with Materials competition, which brought an exciting, competitive element to the event.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who made this day possible! We had over 1,200 visitors join us across the morning and evening sessions, making this event a vibrant platform for learning, innovation, and engagement.
This event wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible efforts and contributions of many individuals. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Dr. Nayef Alsaifi, Chairman of Materials Science and Engineering Department, KFUPM, for the welcoming speech with vision and leadership to ensure the event’s academic integrity and success. Special thanks also go to our esteemed faculty members, Dr. Mohannad Mayyas and Dr. Fatma Ismail, PhD, for incredible speech and whose ongoing support and guidance helped steer our team toward achieving this milestone.

The event was expertly led by Moayad Sabeeb and Abdulrahman Alsendi, who coordinated all aspects of the event with tireless dedication. Fahad Alsulami, as the Logistics Committee Leader, played a crucial role in managing all logistical needs. Faisal Alomair, the Organizing Committee Leader, was instrumental in keeping everything on track, while Tamim Almusharraf, the Communication Committee Leader, ensured seamless communication across teams.

We also want to acknowledge Yousef Al Masaud, the Leader of the Operations Committee, who expertly managed the event’s operations.
